Why did no one tell me Squid Arms was updating again? Welcome back, Miss B!

Actually, this comic was done the night before we had to euthanize Claire. What timing, eh?

Got back from one of the release parties of Darkhouse comics' Beasts of Burden at Comic Book Jones in Staten island (very spacious, very clean and apparently every wednesday is 10% off everything. If it weren't for the fact that I have to pay tolls to get there...) and was pleased as punch to catch the authors Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson. Had fun, got autographs, geeked out and chatted. I got Jill Thompson to sketch DC's Morpheus/Dream/Sandman with her eyes shut after she jokingly claimed she could and Evan put his heart and soul into a composite Milk and Cheese (dumb ass me said Cheese and Milk... what the hell was I thinking? I really need to sleep more often).

I really recommend Beasts of Burden and not out of my Dorkin fanitude. It's a genuine suspenseful little tale that's probably not represented enough in comics today. There's no super heroes, there's no sex appeal. It's just dogs (and one cat. Occasionally more) who realize that there's something that their humans aren't catching. Something is wrong out there and it falls on them to go about setting things right. The dogs aren't thinking like humans would. It's very logical animal action. The supernatural is the motivating cause behind their stories but the animals can be thwarted by something as mundane as lacking opposable thumbs. I read my copy of issue #1 and Dorkin graciously showed me copies of the finished art (no letters) of #2. It's not for the faint of heart. Definitely not an all ages book by any means but I think you have very original stories combined with the top notch art work from Jill Thompson (egads, I saw the lady do her work live. It's insane.)

If you want more of a flavor, check out these self contained stories from previous stories starring the dogs and their favorite cat, Orphan, free at darkhorse's site.

Also, if you want to check out the next party and will be in Brooklyn this Saturday, drop by. Evan is a riot live and Jill is friendly.

The sad thing is I did this comic early and I'm still up at this insane hour.

I think I've merited being called these things at least once. I wonder if there's any other body part that you can call someone. "Sir, you're behaving like a real elbow!" "Oh yeah? Well, you're a total collar bone!"

Ah, workin' labor day. Personally I feel it's justified because I don't think I've ever had a truly hard job.

I don't think I like the idea of radio hosts casually asking their guests, "Tell us how you lost your leg." Then again, I guess the guests voluntarily came on the show for a reason possibly involving their dismemberment.

I guess I'm not 26/27 anymore. I guess I also don't have the lower part to my face. I also guess that I'm having a disturbing effect on cars. I don't jump them or race them or anything, yet parts fall off them.
